JD Edwards – IOT: Internet of Things
A hot topic of discussion is the Internet of Things – JD Edwards enables customers to digitally connect and integrate physical objects.
IOT, the Internet of Things, is the interconnection of everyday objects via the internet enabling them to send and receive data. Digital transformation using IOT has become possible because of the proliferation of Wi-Fi and Internet connectivity coupled with the low cost of embedding “things” with computing capability.
The outcome is that an ever growing range of machines, equipment, components and consumer objects are embedded with electronics, sensors, and software that allows them to collect, connect and share data.
JD Edwards has embraced IOT to enable customers to create opportunities for more direct integration of the physical environment into the business computing systems. This has obvious benefits relating to improvements in monitoring, efficiency, reduced human interventions and greater automation.
IOT Applications for Manufacturing was the topic of a presentation at the recent JD Edwards Summit. This session set out the concept that enterprises are connected digitally and demonstrated real life examples of how JDE customers can benefit from IOT.
Using IOT in Manufacturing, connected assets are able to be monitored remotely, and the system can make real time decisions based on matching the data collected to a set of predetermined parameters. Enterprise integration is achieved through IOT blended to Applications and Contextual Predictive Insights provide for improved product controls.
To support this development, Oracle’s Out of the Box IOT Applications include;

To demonstrate the capability, an example was provided focusing on the maintenance of a forklift. The operation and status of the forklift is monitored via the sensors attached to key parts of the machine such as; steering, propylene tank and the engine.
In addition to tracking the location of the forklift, the demonstration showed how it alerted and created maintenance orders and was also able to detect and report failures or performance issues – either to flag the need for maintenance, highlight misuse or prevent injury from component failure.
Asset monitoring via JDE allows unified, real-time accurate visibility of assets;
- Accurate up-to-the-minute asset location
- Continuous monitoring of assets with customised KPI’s
- Predictive analytics for proactive maintenance
- Automated maintenance and service workflows
At a more macro level, the same principle can be applied to factory operations management – where real time data is used by JDE along with predictive and prescriptive analytics to;
- Gain visibility of real-time manufacturing and equipment performance
- Detect and diagnose production anomalies
- Act on prescriptive and predictive analytics
- Reduce inefficiencies with real-time notifications and automated response
